Tank Car Specialist
This 40-hour course trains HazMat Technicians to respond to railroad incidents involving tank cars, including derailments, mixed freight, and unit train emergencies. Students gain hands-on experience in damage assessment, leak control, product transfer, flaring, and container recovery through a mix of classroom and field work.

PRE-REQUISITES: Hazardous Materials Technician and Prior experience or training with highway cargo tanks and railroad tank cars required
This 40-hour course is focused on responding to railroad incidents involving tank cars carrying hazardous materials. Students will learn about yard incidents, main line derailments,
mixed freight manifest train response and unit train response. They will be instructed on how 111,117,112,105 and 113 series tank cars function in day-to-day operations as well as in
emergencies. Damage assessment, leak control, product transfer, flaring, up righting of containers as well purges will be addressed.
The course is 60% classroom and 40% field work.
What you will learn:
- Incident types: yard events, main line derailments, mixed-freight and unit-train response
- Tank car construction & operation: DOT-111/117/112/105/113 features, fittings, and protective housings
- Size-up & damage assessment: breach types, heat impingement, and stability considerations
- Leak control & product transfer: methods, equipment, grounding/bonding, and pressure-differential transfers
- Flaring & purging: decision-making, setup, and safety controls
- Uprighting operations: coordination with rail & heavy-lift resources, rigging and safety zones
